About Dalray Limewash
Dalray Limewash is a breathable mineral paint made from hydrated lime and natural pigments. It creates a soft, matte finish with gentle tonal movement and can be used on a wide range of surfaces including interior painted walls, brick, render, masonry and plaster. Unlike acrylic paints, limewash contains no added VOCs, plastics or synthetic binders and forms a natural bond with absorbent surfaces for an authentic, timeless finish.
Finish & Appearance
This product dries to a velvety matte texture with natural movement and tonal variation. Limewash is a mineral finish and may have a soft, powdery surface feel after drying, which is a normal characteristic of authentic lime-based paints. Final appearance will vary depending on surface type, lighting and application technique. We recommend testing the colour in your space before full application.
Coverage
A 1.6kg bag makes approximately 4 litres when mixed with water and will cover around 30 square metres with two coats on sealed or previously painted surfaces. Coverage will be lower on highly absorbent substrates such as brick, render or unsealed masonry due to increased porosity.
Where to Use
Suitable for interior and exterior brick, masonry, stone, render, plaster and most previously painted walls that have a matte or low-sheen finish. Ensure the surface is sound and free from dust before application. Limewash is not recommended for constantly wet environments such as inside showers but can be used in general bathroom or laundry walls with adequate ventilation.
Surface Preparation
The surface must be clean, dry and free from dust or oils. Remove loose material and repair cracks if required. Ensure the surface is absorbent; glossy or fully sealed surfaces should be dulled, sanded or primed before use.
Primer Guidance
A primer is not required on raw, absorbent mineral surfaces such as brick or render. Limewash can be applied over suitable water-based undercoats in many situations. However, for best and most consistent results across all substrates, we recommend using the Dalray Limewash Primer, which helps regulate suction, improve mineral bonding, and reduce rub-off. On unpainted gyprock or very dark colours, apply a water-based undercoat first, followed by the Dalray Limewash Primer.
Sealer Guidance
Sealing is not needed for most internal walls. In high-use areas such as hallways, entryways, gyms, bathrooms or commercial spaces, a breathable mineral sealer may be used for added durability and easier maintenance.
Most acrylic sealers will deepen the colour and may introduce a soft sheen, so a small test area is recommended. Mineral Sealers may also deepen the colour slightly, but to a lesser extent.
Dalray does not currently sell sealers, but compatible breathable mineral sealers are widely available.
Mixing and Application
Mix the powder with clean water according to the instructions provided. Stir thoroughly before use and between coats. Apply using a block brush in relaxed, criss-cross strokes or in a cloud-like formation to build natural depth and variation. Two coats are recommended for most surfaces. Three coats may be applied for added texture.
Shipping
We offer free shipping Australia-wide on orders over $59.95. All orders are dispatched within 1 - 3 business days. Tracking information is provided once your order is shipped.
Materials
This product is made primarily from hydrated lime sourced from limestone and combined with natural mineral pigments. Natural additives are also added to improve workability and binding. No plastics or synthetic resins are added.
Important safety and use information
This is a natural mineral finish and variation in colour and texture may occur. Always test a small area before full application. Surface preparation and application are the responsibility of the user. Use appropriate PPE when mixing and applying and only in well-ventilated areas. Avoid inhaling lime dust and wear a mask and gloves when mixing and applying. Keep out of reach of children. Dalray’s liability is limited to product replacement or refund as permitted by law.
FAQs
Please read our FAQs page to find out more.
Do I need a primer?
It depends on the surface. Limewash can be applied directly to raw, absorbent mineral surfaces such as brick or render. On previously painted or mixed surfaces, a primer helps regulate suction and improve bonding. For best and most consistent results, we recommend using the Dalray Limewash Primer. On unpainted gyprock or very dark colours, apply a water-based undercoat first, followed by the Dalray Limewash Primer.
You can find more detailed surface guidance on our Application page.
Can I apply over existing paint?
Yes, in many cases. Limewash can be applied over existing water-based painted walls, provided the surface is sound, clean, and not sealed with a glossy or non-breathable coating.
In most cases, a primer is recommended to regulate suction and improve bonding. For best and most consistent results, we recommend using the Dalray Limewash Primer.
On very dark colours or patched plasterboard, apply a water-based undercoat first, followed by the Dalray Limewash Primer.
Is it wipeable?
Limewash is a breathable finish and is not fully wipeable like acrylic paint. For wipeable walls, use a breathable mineral sealer. With a mineral sealer, we still recommend using a soft sponge with no scrubbing.
How many coats do I need?
Two coats are recommended. If you're looking for extra depth, you could go over with a third coat and only paint parts of the wall which increases the texture and colour variance.
Can I use limewash in my bathroom?
Yes, limewash can be used in bathrooms, provided it is applied to the correct areas and prepared properly.
Limewash performs well on bathroom walls that are not subject to direct water contact, such as general wall areas and ceilings. It is not suitable for wet zones like inside showers or areas with constant splashing unless a compatible sealer is used.
In bathrooms, correct preparation is important. Surfaces should be sound and properly primed, and for increased durability and reduced powdering, we recommend finishing with a breathable mineral sealer.
As with all lime finishes, good ventilation will help the surface cure and perform at its best.
