Why exterior limewash

A finish that belongs on masonry.

Unlike standard exterior paint, limewash is mineral-based. On raw, absorbent masonry, it soaks in and bonds with the surface, creating a soft natural finish with subtle movement.

Breathable

Allows masonry to behave more naturally rather than trapping moisture under a plastic film.

Softens brick

Ideal for dated red, cream or brown brick when you want a lighter, more timeless facade.

DIY friendly

Mix with water, apply with a block brush, and build colour with thin coats.

Low waste

Mix only what you need and store the remaining powder for later touch-ups.

Before & after

What can I limewash?

Limewash works best on raw, absorbent masonry. If water absorbs into the surface rather than beading, that is usually a good sign.

🧱
No primer needed

Unpainted brick

Apply directly to clean, absorbent brick. Coverage is lower because brick is porous.

🪨
No primer needed

Raw stone

Beautiful on limestone and natural stone. Always test first as porosity varies.

🏠
No primer needed

Raw render

Works directly on absorbent cement render. Rough texture may require more product.

🎨
Primer recommended

Painted masonry

Previously painted surfaces need prep so the limewash has the right mineral surface to bond to.

Limewash vs rendering

Why not just render?

Dalray Limewash

  • Soft mineral finish with visible texture
  • DIY friendly for many homeowners
  • Refresh with another coat over time
  • Lower-cost transformation than full render

Rendering

  • Changes the surface profile completely
  • Usually requires professional installation
  • Can be significantly more expensive
  • Creates a more uniform, solid finish

Whites and warm neutrals are the most popular exterior choices because they brighten brick without looking stark.

Questions

Exterior limewash FAQs.

Will limewash wash off in the rain?+

Once cured, limewash is weather resistant. It naturally weathers and softens over time, which is part of the finish. For highly exposed areas, a compatible breathable sealer can be considered.

Do I need primer on exterior brick?+

Not on raw, absorbent brick. If the brick has already been painted or sealed, preparation is needed so the limewash can bond evenly.

How do I know if my brick is sealed?+

Try a water test. If water absorbs into the brick, it is likely unsealed. If it beads or runs off, the surface may be sealed and will need additional preparation.

Can I apply it myself?+

Yes. Many Dalray customers DIY their exterior limewash. The key is to mix to a milk-like consistency and apply thin coats with a block brush rather than building up thick layers.

How much does one bag cover?+

As a guide, one 4L bag covers approximately 20–25m² on raw brick with two coats. Rough, porous or heavily textured surfaces may require more.

Ready to test it on your home?

Order a tester first so you can see the colour on your exact brick, stone or render before committing to the full project.
