Product & Application
Lighting, surfaces & colour
The appearance of our limewash paint may vary depending on the surface, lighting, and primer used. Subtle differences in colour and a powdery texture to the touch are a natural characteristic of limewash. We recommend ordering a tester packet if you would like to see how our colours appear or feel in your space.
Is your paint a powder or a liquid?
Dalray Limewash comes in a powdered form. This means it weighs a quarter of the weight of regular paint, saving you money on shipping. Mixing with water is all that is required to prepare the paint for use.
How do I mix and use Dalray limewash paint?
We have detailed instructions on our website! To see how to use and apply our paint, please visit our instructions page.
What surfaces can I use Dalray paint on?
Dalray limewash paint can be used on a wide range of surfaces, however different surfaces may require different application processes and post-application treatments, such as a sealer. See a summary chart of suitable surfaces and recommended preparation on our instructions page.
We do not recommend use of our product on floors. Because it is a natural mineral finish, it has a softer surface and would not hold up well against foot traffic.
Which primers do you recommend?
Dalray Limewash is compatible with a wide range of mineral or water-based primers.
For best results, we recommend using Dalray Limewash Primer, which is specifically designed to create a breathable, mineral-compatible base that supports even absorption and reduces rub-off during curing.
If using an alternative primer, choose a water-based undercoat with good adhesion and a low-sheen or matte finish.
We do not recommend primers with strong sealing properties or glossier finishes, as these can reduce adhesion and alter the final appearance of the limewash. If a high-seal or glossy primer has already been used, lightly sanding the surface prior to application will improve adhesion. Oil-based primers are not recommended.
For more detailed guidance on when a primer is recommended, surface-specific advice, and application instructions, please refer to our Primer product page and Instructions page.
Do unpainted brick or render need to be primed before using Dalray limewash paint?
No - unpainted brick and render do not need to be primed regardless of whether they are indoor or outdoor surfaces. They are porous enough that the paint adheres extremely well to their surfaces, so a primer is not required.
If the brick or render has been previously painted, a primer will be required.
What is the typical coverage of Dalray paint?
Typical coverage of Dalray paint is 7.5㎡ per litre, based on 2 coats of paint.
When our full sized product is mixed with 3L of water, it forms approximately 4 litres of limewash paint which is enough to cover about 30㎡ of primed wall with two coats. In other words, our 1.6kg product should be enough paint to cover an average sized bedroom (approximately).
Coverage for brick and render will be lower due to the porosity and absorbancy of those surfaces.
How does the tone and texture of limewash vary from regular paint?
Limewash is known for its organic variations in tone, which can look like subtle clouds from afar. The tone of Dalray Limewash is affected by the type of limestone, pigments and natural agents we add. We aim to produce limewash with subtle tone variations that gently add interest to rooms to life.
Limewasjh is an organic, natural product, that is slightly chalky, or powdery to touch. Given some transfer can occur on contact, a sealer is recommended in high contact areas.
How does limewash wear compared to regular paint?
By nature of the organic elements in limewash paint, it is less hardy than modern paints which have chemical additives to improve their hardiness. For most regular applications, such as painting the walls of lounge rooms, bedrooms and hallways, we find this isn't a concern.
For applications where there is expected to be additional wear and tear, customers could apply a clear, matte spray-on paint sealer once our limewash has dried to preserve the surface. However, the benefit of limewash without a sealer is that it's very easy to do touch-ups and it retains the breathability of the paint.
Do I need a sealer?
A sealer “locks in” the surface and reduces the light powder transfer typical of matte Limewash, so is recommended for any high contact areas.
What type of sealer should I purchase?
We don’t currently sell a sealer. We recommend you choose one based on your priority:
If you want to keep breathability and a matte, mineral look, go with a mineral silicate sealer. It stays vapour-open, reduces powder transfer, and only slightly deepens the colour.
If you need maximum wipeability and scuff resistance, choose a water-based acrylic sealer. It forms a thin film, is easiest to clean, deepens colour more, and may add a soft sheen.
Sealers improve cleanability but do not waterproof walls (not for constantly wet zones like inside showers). Always check the product’s TDS and test a small area over your exact primer/surface.
