Dalray Acrylic Sealer

Dalray Limewash is a breathable mineral coating made from hydrated lime and natural pigments. It creates a soft, matte finish with gentle tonal movement and can be used on a wide range of surfaces including interior painted walls, brick, render, masonry and plaster.

Unlike acrylic paints and many modern limewash-style coatings, Dalray Limewash contains no added VOCs, plastics or synthetic binders, allowing it to form a natural mineral bond with absorbent surfaces.

The appearance of our limewash paint may vary depending on the surface, lighting, and primer used. Like all authentic limewash finishes, light surface transfer when touched is a natural characteristic of the mineral finish, particularly in the first few weeks while curing. This is part of what gives limewash its living, breathable quality and reduces over time. Using the Dalray Limewash Primer and a breathable mineral sealer will help minimise this in higher-traffic areas.

Suitable for interior and exterior brick, masonry, stone, render, plaster and most previously painted walls with a matte or low-sheen finish. Ensure the surface is clean, sound and suitably prepared before application.

Limewash is not suitable for floors or wet zones such as inside showers. It may be used on general bathroom and laundry walls outside direct splash zones where there is adequate ventilation.

A 1.6kg bag makes approximately 4 litres when mixed with water and will cover around 30 square metres with two coats on sealed or previously painted surfaces. Coverage will vary by application technique and will be lower on highly absorbent substrates such as brick, render or unsealed masonry due to increased porosity.

The surface must be clean, dry and free from dust, oils or loose material. Repair cracks if required and ensure the surface is sound and suitably absorbent. Glossy or fully sealed surfaces should be dulled, sanded or primed before application.

Testing on a small area is recommended before full application.

A primer is not required on raw, absorbent mineral surfaces such as brick or render. Limewash can be applied over suitable water-based undercoats in many situations. However, for best and most consistent results across all substrates, we recommend using the Dalray Limewash Primer, which helps regulate suction, improve mineral bonding, and reduce rub-off. On unpainted gyprock or very dark colours, apply a water-based undercoat first, followed by the Dalray Limewash Primer.

Sealing is optional for most interior limewash walls. Leaving limewash unsealed preserves its natural breathability, matte character and ease of touching up.

In higher-use interior areas such as hallways, entryways, busy family homes and commercial spaces, Dalray Acrylic Sealer may be applied to improve durability, reduce surface transfer and make the finish easier to maintain. As an acrylic coating, it will reduce the breathability of the limewash.

In bathrooms or other areas subject to regular humidity, use a compatible breathable mineral sealer. Dalray Acrylic Sealer may be suitable for well-ventilated bathrooms or powder rooms where humidity is limited and the surface is outside direct splash zones.

For exterior surfaces, use a compatible breathable mineral sealer designed for outdoor exposure. Dalray Acrylic Sealer is for interior use only.

Any sealer may slightly alter the colour, sheen, texture or tonal variation of limewash. Always test it on a small, inconspicuous area first.

Mix the powder with clean water according to the instructions provided. Stir thoroughly before use and between coats.

Apply using a block brush in relaxed criss-cross strokes or a soft cloud-like motion to build natural depth and variation. Two coats are recommended for most surfaces, with a third coat optional for additional texture.

Using less paint on the brush will generally produce a more textured finish.
