The type of surface will determine whether a primer is required. Some surfaces are more porous which means that the paint will adhere without the need for a surface primer. See our FAQ for a list of surfaces and priming requirements.

In general, unpainted brick or render will not require a primer, and painted brick or render will require a primer. Painted or unpainted plasterboard (eg. interior walls) will also require a primer. We recommend non-glossy mineral or water-based primers. See our FAQ for more information.

Our product is made primarily from hydrated lime, which is a powder formed from the burning of limestone. Limestone is a naturally occurring sedimentary rock consisting of high levels of calcium and magnesium carbonate. We also add a combination of oxide pigments, primarily derived from oxide minerals to form the desired colour, and natural additives to adjust the binding and application characteristics of the paint.

In its powdered form, our full size limewash paint products that make 4L of paint are approximately 1.5kg. Our tester limewash paint products are 150g and once water is added makes approximately 400ml of paint.

Typical coverage of Dalray paint is 10㎡ per litre, based on 2 coats of paint. 

When our full sized product is mixed with 2.5L of water, it forms approximately 4 litres of limewash paint which is enough to cover about 40㎡ of primed wall with two coats. In other words, our 1.5kg product should be enough paint to cover an average sized bedroom (approximately).

Coverage for brick and render will be lower due to the porosity and absorbancy of those surfaces.

Store powdered product in a cool, dark place. 

Full size product: To make 4L of paint, add 2.5L of hot (not boiling) water to a bucket with product and mix thoroughly. The ideal thickness is the consistency of whole milk.

Tester: To make 400mL of paint, add 250mL of hot (not boiling) water to a bucker or large bowl with the product and mix thoroughly. 

Once water is added, cover bucket or vessel with alfoil or cling wrap and store the liquid mixture in a cool, dark place until intended use. Ensure that the product is mixed thoroughly prior to the second coat. If the liquid looks thicker than when you first added water, add small amounts of water until at desired consistency.​
